Mystery Box

The recent Ted Talk I watched was a very interesting one. It seemed the speaker had a great relationship with his grandfather, who gave him all kinds of stuff to take apart. I share his interest, as taking things apart and seeing what you can make out of the parts is a fun pastime. I also thought it was cool how he mentioned Jaws, which is one of my favorite movies.

20 Rules

These were great tips on making designs that I'll be using for sure. When you want people to notice something, you should make it as interesting and easy to read as possible. Tips like avoiding color mixing and don't disregard legibility help make an advertisement easy to read, while design for your audience helps it become fun. Hopefully these steps help me create something memorable.

An African Story Plot

In the wilderness of Africa, young boy named Harry gets separated from his family during a storm. Fortunately for him, however, a family of hippos take pity on him and raise him as one of their own. Harry grows to love the savannah, and makes friends with Samuel the Rhino, Leonidus the Leopard, and the elephant herd. However, not every animal is happy about a human living in their habitat. A pack of hyenas, a vicious crocodile named Scales, and a murderous lion named RazorClaw are more than willing to kill Harry solely because he's human. Can Harry survive the dangers of the savannah and earn his manhood, or will he turn into lion chow?

Movie Posters

Dustin Stanton seems like a very talented artist, especially with his posters. My favorite designs were the Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love posters, as I felt they gave viewers a good idea of what to expect in the movie. His creative process is insightful to, as the first draft won't always be the one to use as the finished product. It also takes more than one person to make a poster, as Stanton found out while working with Paul. Stanton also hit this job through his artistic work in high school, which can be very inspiring to younger artists.

Designers

This video was very interesting to watch and offered up a lot of good arguments. Designs have become a lot more based on presentation than performance, like the speaker was saying with his first few products. Design thinking should be focused on more, like with Brunelle's railway design. Design thinking can be done by everyone, so it shouldn't solely be left in the hands of designers.

An Interview with Montygog

Interview with Montygog

This was very interesting and neat to read. Montygog seems like a great artist who took inspiration from the same sources I did. I can really relate to Montygog because I taught myself how to draw. I also always try to improve my art and never give up on it.

Designs Are Important

Rethinking The Way We Sit Down

This was an entertaining and thought-provoking video to watch. Some of the designs were really cool, like the set of chairs at the beginning of the video. Good points were made as well, like that designs don't always have to be extravagant and lavish. In fact, they can be something as simple as marks on a gas mask or a plate for food. Regardless, all designs make using certain objects cool to do, and thinking of how to design objects is a fun process as well. Hopefully designs continue to be an integral part of our society.

How to Ruin a Great Design

This was a very interesting article to read. I think it's a shame that people don't take the time to make sure traffic signs are done correctly. Not only is this confusing to drivers, but dangerous as well. They could be so focused on figuring out what the sign says that they don't pay attention to the road. Hopefully this is just a temporary problem, as it was said in the article not all signs are like this.
